// V ✨ REMINDER: Everyone's coping methods are different. Personally, for me, talking to people can make it worse, but for others, maybe it can help. Please keep this in mind while reading. {ID: How to handle your panic attacks and anxiety attacks, step by step. 1. Retreat. If you feel phobic, exit the situation until anxiety subsides. Retreat is a temporary leave until you feel better. Escape can reinforce your phobia. 2. Talk to another person. This helps get your mind off of symptoms and anxious thoughts. 3. Move around. Dissipates extra energy/adrenaline created by fight-or-flight reaction. Instead of resisting, you move with it. 4. Stay in the present. Focus on concrete objects around you in your immediate environment. Try actually touching objects. 5. Engage in a simple repetitive activity. unwrap and chew gum count snap rubber band sing wet towel on face  6. Do something that requires focused concentration. - read a book or magazine - puzzles - knit/sew - write  7. Express anger. If you can physically express anger rather than just talking, you may be able to stop the panic attack before it blows up. - pound on a pillow or your bed beat a pillow or cushion with a bat - scream into pillow  8. Experience something immediately pleasurable. - be held - pleasurable snack/meal hot shower or bath  9. Visualize a comforting person/scene. 10. Practice thought stopping. - take a deep breath then internally or externally say, “Stop”! - replace anxious thoughts with calming and supportive statements (“I am calm. I am strong”). - snap a rubber band or splash cold water to disrupt thoughts 11. Practice abdominal breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply from your abdomen. 12. Practice muscle relaxation. clench fists. Hold for 10 seconds, release and repeat. tighten/raise shoulders up, hold 10 seconds, release. 13. Repeat positive coping statements. 14. 🔑 To breathe efficiently, your torso must be in a good position 🎈If you can't breathe in a position, you don't own that position - this is a phrase made popular by physical therapist Gray Cook 🎈 To breathe properly means to be able to use the diaphragm properly and efficiently. This can only be accomplished if we are 'stacked' or positioned well. Since the diaphragm is a 360 degree muscle at the base of the ribcage, our posture/position matters ALOT when it comes to using this muscle 🎈 Looking at the picture, you will see that when you are in a good posture or position you are essentially stacked well. This means your ribcage is positioned over your pelvis. The base of the ribcage (where the diaphragm originates) and pelvic floor are aligned and this is how the diaphragm can work best and get the most excursion in order to create negative pressure and draw air into the lungs 🎈 If you aren't stacked well and have poor position, then it makes it much harder to breathe (because the diaphragm is positionally inhibited). Oh how I wish we’d had a white Christmas! All we had in the UK was rain unfortunate but I consoled myself by looking at my beautiful photos of cologne from the beginning of the month. It snowed so heavily and was really cold but it made the city so pretty. I love the architecture and the river, with all the soft lighting from the snow. The sun did manage to peep through the opaque snow clouds too and was magnified by reflecting off the white! I loved exploring it! 📚 I am #currentlyreading The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George. It just makes me want to build a book barge and go floating off down the Seine. The idea of using books as medicine for the soul is a genius idea and so necessary for life. So I challenge you — what books would you prescribe for someone who is a little bit lonely, a little bit insecure about their self worth and a little bit lost?
