The 1960s fashion scene is perhaps best captured in one word: #Youthquake! The term that immediately invokes dancing, mini-skirted teenagers was coined by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland to describe the rise of young people as fashion authorities in the #1960s. It was a period that witnessed the rise of a new generation of British ready-to-wear designers who set the tone for fashion, ousting Paris from its thrown and redefining the very nature of how fashion was made, consumed and worn. A popular narrative perhaps, but one that is not entirely true as curator Colleen Hill reveals in her new exhibition Paris Refashioned, 1957-1968 @museumatfit. Hill positions Parisian designers at the forefront of the 1960s fashion ready-to-wear revolution, both as innovators and tastemakers. From the young ready-to-wear stylistes such as Emmanuelle Khanh and Sonia Rykiel to the upper echelons of the haute couture including designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and André Courrèges, Paris' contribution to the 1960s Youthquake is on full display at The Museum at FIT until April 15th. Check out my recent interview with Hill is the latest #FashionHistoryTalks! on TheArtofDress.org. Model #DonyaleLuna photographed by #GuyBourdin for Vogue, 1966. 2017 Highlight. Finishing the year on a massive positive with this installation from Hull City of Culture. The Sixteen Thousand are clay bricks modelled with artwork from 16,000 under 5’s in Hull. It was the most joyous thing I’ve seen this year. Well done to Hull for its inclusivity and investment in the creativity of its young people. The arts in our UK schools have been sidelined since 2010 and cuts have meant teachers have been made redundant and feel unvalued. Children’s creativity is not being given a chance to flourish. This installation gives me hope that the youthquake will change things for the better in 2018 and beyond. #hull #yorkshire @2017hull #cityofculture2017 #cityofculture #art #brick #bricks #clay #clayart #under5 #preschool #youth #youthquake #investintheyouth #investinthefuture #investinthearts #mcmillannursery #2017highlight #purejoy
'Youthquake' has been named word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries. Defined as "a significant, cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people," the word first built momentum in June, when young voters in the UK almost carried the Labour Party to an unlikely victory in the general election. Young people also had an influence on the Catalan independence poll, New Zealand's parliamentary elections and Australian's marriage equality referendum. ~Heavy stares revolves around her as she stepped out her door. People made faces as they saw what she wore Comments poured in. And so did taunts. Nobody asked her if that was what she wants Lean in closely and you’ll see You’ll see what a winner she is to be. “You’re at fault” “It’s not his mistake” Girls get hurt everyday Is this is what’s your take? Maybe she’ll keep quiet and do what she’s been told to. But remember, if you light a matchstick near kerosene, it will still do what its supposed To do. Strong, beautiful, bold and fearless. Asked to keep quiet and work in kitchens If this is the way you treat the goddess of your country I’ll guarantee you absolutely no glory. Let her live. Let her breath. After all, you’re only here Because at some point. She agreed.~ @thebumblepri #youthquake• Okay so first off thank you so much for all your thought and emotion evoking content on feminism...Considering we’ve posted a lot on this..Id be preferring normal type of quotes and poems...do send them in.
~Treat them the same. He and she they will share the same fate. Why treat her less and treat him more? Why confine him to a cubicle with a system for 8 hours a day? Why confine her to four walls a day with a kitchen and a mop? “Boys shouldn’t cook” Who said so? “She’s not meant to be in that cubicle” Says who? We preach lies of equality and of equal opportunities. And tell our children to never tell lies? Is this how society lives? Preaches lies and preaches never to tell lies too? Truth will prevail. In every corner of the world should be there an equal chance for him and her. A woman should feel at home in a cubicle And so should a man in a kitchen.~ @theayushsrihari -- Wonderful bit of simple yet very relatable language and thoughts. Great job man. I'm sure you've reflected many people's thoughts out here. #youthquake
