“My father said, from now you are going to be with him. And first I cried because I didn’t want to. And when I saw the man I cried because I was scared. My father told me you are going to go to bed and lay with him. That’s how it went with my first husband, I was forced by my father.” –Leonela, 79 years old from Satinga, Colombia.⠀⠀ Leonela explains that women from the countryside didn’t have the right to choose their husband, in general they were exchanged for money or supplies. When Leonela had her first period, her father considered her a women and decided to give her to a man from the village much older than her.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Espanol: “Mi padre me dijo: con este te vas a juntar. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ For decades, Buenaventura, the most important harbor city in Colombia, has been caught in the middle of the armed conflict between the government and the FARC guerrilla movement. Because of the risk of ostracism and fear of retribution, most of the women prefer to use a pseudonym or to hide their faces. They hope that by telling their stories, they can raise awareness, spur change, and let other women know that they are not alone. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #opensociety #16days #colombia #buenaventura #endgbv #unwomen #domesticviolence #breakthesilence #genderbasedviolence #girlsnotbrides #endchildmarriage

December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Today's #MTBWellnessWednesday post is in honour of the women who were killed through a gender-based massacre at the Polytechnic School in Montreal; and the over 1200 missing & murdered Indigenous women. They were all someone’s child. They were all beautiful, and more focus needs to be placed on the security and wellbeing of our sisters. Today we pray for safety & justice for women around the world 💛✨ • • • • • •#ecolepolytechnique #genderbasedviolence #equalityforall #powertogirls #missingandmurderedindigenouswomen #plancanada #becauseiamagirl #youractionsmatter #december6 #rememberanceday #jemesouviens

Just some much needed education on consent. When a woman consents to making out with you for instance, that's not consenting to anything more. She doesn't owe you anything other than what she's comfortable with. People in adult relationships should speak about consent more often. #consent #unitedagainstharrassment #unicefsouthafrica #violentculture #sexualharrassment #womensstruggle #menaretrash #metoo #noexcuse #genderbasedviolence #violenceagainstwomen #sexualviolence #rapeculture #wokeproject #blackfeminism #feministblog #johannesburg #southafrica

According to the UN, an estimated 7000 Nepali women and girls are trafficked to India, mostly to brothels. HCC distributes anti-trafficking comics to help children and communities identify and avoid potential trafficking situations. We join the global community in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence by working to prevent the trafficking of women and girls.
