On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, let us remember the women who lost their lives at École Polytechnique and pledge to confront, raise awareness and prevent misogyny and violence against women. Today was the day! In honour of The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, I had an incredible opportunity to tour the facilities of @yellowbrickhouses! Each year, Yellow Brick House receives about 3000 calls asking for assistance from women in-need. They work tirelessly to try to create a comfortable home and environment for all those in need of their services. Thank you for everything you do for the Richmond Hill community! #Yellowbrickhouse #16days #RichmondHillCommunity #myactionsmatter

A year ago today, I shared a meaningful poem by @rupikaur_ to mark the start of the #16daysofactivism Against Gender-Based Violence. I recently sat down with Rupi to talk about her experiences and her work, and I am so excited to share it with you today. Here’s a clip from our conversation about overcoming and healing from violence against the body. You can watch the full video on my Facebook page – click the link in my bio! I hope you all had a great start to the week! I had a super busy day, but this evening has been lovely, baking cakes for a bake sale tomorrow for the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence. If you haven’t heard of it check it out! . It’s not *just* a whistle, it’s harassment. #myactionsmatter 💜

On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada, the MUHC observed a White Ribbon Day. The wearing of a white ribbon symbolizes a pledge to be active in the conversation and prevention of violence against women. ** Retired RVH nurse Erin Hogg spearheaded the initiative at the hospital, and has been leading the way for the past 20 years! 💗 She is passing on the torch to the MUHC communications team, and today marks the first time ribbons were distributed across all sites 🏥. ** Thank you to the students at LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School, who helped create the white ribbons. And a special thank you to Women Aware / Femmes Averties. #myactionsmatter #16daysofactivism

#repost @ubcequity ・・・ “28 years ago, I was in my second year at university in civil engineering, just like Genevieve. As I look back, I remember. If not for all the mentors and role models, both men and women, I would not be here today. [...] We must never forget, we must never become complacent. Not just to honor these women. Not just to honor the lives that never came to be. The women that never got to become engineers, entrepreneurs, leaders, role models, parents, grandparents… Simply because they were women who wanted to be engineers. We must never forget. Not just for them, but for us. If we are going to create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive... [...] One doesn’t have to look back 28 years to understand that. Even today, approximately every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. This persistent reality of gender-based violence and harassment… We must never become complacent. No. We must be vigilant, relentless, in trying to create an inclusive environment where everyone is welcomed, everyone is included, and everyone can thrive. [...] And as I look back, I appreciate how far we have come. [...] In 1989, there were three female professors in engineering at UBC. Today, 40 per cent of assistant professors are women. In 1989, Canada was graduating 11 per cent female engineers, today we graduate 21 per cent. And here at UBC, almost 30 per cent of the incoming class are women. We still have a long way to go before there truly is equity, parity and inclusion, but we have made tremendous progress. [...] Our community here at UBC has changed because men and women, faculty, staff and students have all worked together...[...] Today, I ask you to think about what you can do to continue this journey towards creating an equitable and inclusive engineering profession and society. [...] Dr. Sheryl Staub-French is a Professor in Civil Engineering and Equity Lead in the Faculty of Applied Science. In 2014 she was named the inaugural holder of Goldcorp Professorship in Women in Engineering. Today we remember the 14 female engineering students killed @polymtl on #december6th, 1989. #letsthriveubc #endvaw #ubc

Today is the National Day of Remembrance and tonight I joined Trustee Cameron, #Caledon Cllrs Groves, Innis and Mezzapelli and Family Transition Place at our Caledon Public Library in Bolton for a candlelight vigil to remember the women who have been lost to violence and to take a stand against gender-based violence. STATEMENT: On this day in 1989, 14 young, bright, talented people were gunned down in Montreal solely were women. And even though that was 28 years ago we are still experiencing violence against women in our society today. It’s time to take a stand. We need to take action. This years theme is “My Actions Matter”. As a community leader I am committed to doing my part in creating a safe, equitable and inclusive #Caledon. As the father of a young woman and a young man, I will walk the talk and be a good role model for future generations. Individuals, communities, governments and organizations need to embrace a shared vision for the future—a future where there are no excuses—zero tolerance and social and legal justice for victims of violence. #myactionsmatter

Today marks the 28th year since the shooting at Polytechnique where 14 women lost their lives. This event has shaped the way we view violence, especially violence towards women. According to statistics, one in three women will suffer abuse in relationships. For them, the ability to speak out can seem an impossible task. The #metoo campaign has helped a lot with that. Violence however is not gender based, despite women representing the higher statistic. Men are also victims of abuse. Let’s work together to create a more sensitized and socially aware community that values, cherishes, and respects individuals. Thank you to the beautiful teens who handed me this slip of paper today. The action, though small, definitely had an impact. #letsendviolence #myactionsmatter #polytechnique
