100 years ago, the Halifax Explosion changed the course or our city forever. The tragic events of that day have shaped the city we know and love, both literally and figuratively. 100 years ago, our city was destroyed, but our community remained in tact–and the vibrant Halifax spirit that is alive and well today is the surest testament to just that. Watch my statement from the floor of the House of Commons. #halifax #halifaxexplosion #cdnpoli #nspoli #community #regeneration #communityspirit

On Dec. 6, 1917, a traditional Mi'kmaq community faced the full force of the Halifax Explosion. • The Norwegian steamship Imo was cruising through Halifax Harbour, carrying Belgian relief supplies, when it rammed into the French munitions boat Mont-Blanc, which was carrying TNT and fuel destined for war efforts. • The collision started a fire, and the resulting explosion killed nearly 2,000 people in the blink of an eye. • Less than two kilometres from the explosion's epicentre, sat the small Mi'kmaq village of Turtle Grove, or Kepe'kek, in the area known today as Tuft's Cove in Dartmouth. • 'That some of them survived is a miracle,' says Mi'kmaq playwright Catherine Martin. 100 years later, she relives the story of her great-aunt Rachel Cope, who lived with her husband John and their many children in Turtle Grove. • • • Photos by Nova Scotia Archives and Nova Scotia Museum #cbcnews #cbcindigenous #halifax #halifaxexplosion #history #indigenous #Mi'kmaq

The North Park Armoury aided local residents following the 1917 #HalifaxExplosion, acting as a shelter and food distribution location for those who had lost their homes. One hundred years later, a $130-million rehabilitation project is underway to preserve this heritage building so it continues to meet the operational needs of the Canadian Army Reserve and cadet units. Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion . My grandmother, 5 yrs old at the time , was walking to school moments before the ships collided. When she realized she had forgotten her mittens, she turned back and went home, and thus was with her family when the devastating explosion occurred . The stories she told me, and my children , of the events that occurred after, and the impact on her family, and neighbours - the search for bread, families who lost their little girls - were riveting and spellbinding. (From the Canadian Encyclopedia: Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945. The north end of Halifax was wiped out by the blast and subsequent tsunami. Nearly 2,000 people died, another 9,000 were maimed or blinded, and more than 25,000 were left without adequate shelter.) The following day a blizzard hit Halifax which added to the suffering of those without shelter and food . #halifax #halifaxexplosion #1917 #explosion #anniversary #100 #years #memories #family #grandmother #stories #tragedy #wartime #ships #novascotia #canada

Refuge in the Park “…they were caught up in the great flood running from the threat of another explosion...but eventually the boy’s mother managed to get them a lift on a baker’s ‘team’, and the driver took them to Point Pleasant Park. More than thee thousand wretched, panic-stricken people had taken refuge in the park... They sheltered among the trees and brushes, and some of them cut down branches and lit fires, for it was very cold…” -- Michael J.
